Actress Melissa Gilbert, who we all know and love for her portrayal of the loveable Laura Ingalls Wilder on “Little House on the Prairie”, has announced that she will run for Congress in Michigan’s 8th District.

Gilbert and her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, live in Livingston County. Gilbert will run as a Democrat against U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Rochester).

In a statement on her official website, Gilbert stated,

I'm running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today's economy. I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.

Gilbert moved to Howell in 2013, after marrying Busfield who grew up in East Lansing.

Gilbert has never held political office before, but served as the President of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001-2005.
