Memorial Day 2013 – Just Another Holiday?
Chances are, when you think about Memorial Day, you picture the old guard, you know, the guys who show up at the funerals of fellow old timers to stand guard with the other guys from the local VFW post. They stand in solemn thought while presenting the colors and waiting to present a flag and for the luncheon put on by the ladies auxiliary. It’s a sight we are all accustomed to by now.
Fact is, Veterans are of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. As I write this, I look back over my memory over the course of 43 years, and I am very hard pressed to find a time when we were not in s fight somewhere. From Vietnam to Iraq, so many have offered to make the ultimate sacrifice so we could live free and pretty much as we please.
Our Veterans didn’t ask if you were a Republican or Democrat. They didn’t ask if you were rich or poor, gay or straight who you choose to worship…they simply said “I am going to do my part to protect freedom” Some gave the ultimate sacrifice, others came back changed, or missing an arm or a leg. It’s certainly a memorial holiday it takes a few years to truly understand what was sacrificed, but it’s also a day that should not be whispered about or forgotten.
This year, we at WFGR would take time to remember all of our Veterans….Past, Present and Future. We have set up a special phone number for you to call and leave a greeting for a Vet in your life. We are not out to make a lot of noise with this, we are certainly not trying to make a buck and above all we are not taking lightly a day set aside to remember all those who have gone before us, and those to come.
If you have a special message for a Vet, please call 616-459-1672 and leave a message about who you plan on remembering this Memorial Day. We will record them and play some back over the course of Memorial Day Weekend in honor of those who have given so very much for all of us.
Please remember too, the Grand Rapids Home For Veterans has a chance to win $250,000 from the Home Depot…..you are asked to help by simply CLICKING HERE to vote, share and repeat.
