One of Hollywood's great filmmakers has passed away -- "The Graduate" director Mike Nichols has died at age 83.

ABC News made the announcement Thursday, November 20, as Nichols was the husband of newswoman Diane Sawyer.

Though he's best known for "The Graduate", which propelled Dustin Hoffman to stardom, Nichols's resume also includes such classics as "Barefoot in the Park", which many consider to be Robert Redford's break out role, "The Odd Couple", "Working Girl" and "The Birdcage".

He was one of just 12 people to have completed what is known as an EGOT, winning an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony in his lifetime.

Aside from Sawyer, Nichols is survived by three adult children and four grandchildren.

Here is a classic scene from "The Graduate" where recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock (Dustim Hoffman) is whisked away from his graduation party to be given a word of advice from Mr. McGuire (Walter Brooke).
