Miss Colombia Still Not Over Miss Universe Snafu, Had To ‘Grieve’ Over The ‘Great Injustice’ Of Being Incorrectly Crowned Winner

It's been a few weeks since the Miss Universe crown was so abruptly—and literally—snatched from atop the shiny coif of Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, who had been wrongly announced as the winner by host Steve Harvey.

The true winner was, of course, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who was promptly and correctly crowned only a few moments after Harvey's blunder. Gutierrez seemed to take the shocking live-televised twist in stride, even posting a gracious message on her Instagram just days after. Unfortunately, it seems that despite trying to brush off the embarrassing mistake, Miss Colombia is really not all that over the Miss Universe snafu after all.

In a recent interview with Colombia's W Radio on Wednesday December 30, Gutierrez told the station that after the broadcast, she pulled away from society as she "had to grieve for what happened." Referring to the pageant's mistake as a "great injustice," she added, "I was disconnected. I haven't received phone calls from almost anyone. Very few people have communicated with me."

While we can probably think of greater and more devastating injustices in the world, it's hard not to feel bad for and empathize with Gutierrez, who described the incident as a "great shock" that devastated her longtime dream: "I have always dreamed of this, of being Miss Universe... It was very humiliating for me."

She also revealed that when Harvey first returned to the stage to announce his error, she laughed, explaining, "I thought it was a joke. In the rehearsals, he did things like that." But the laughter didn't last long, and Gutierrez maintains that the way the error was handled on live television was not fair to her, only adding to the humiliation she had to endure.

"There are a thousand ways to do things," Miss Colombia explained. "They could have done it, I don't know, the next day in a press conference or a press release... They did not do things the right way."

Despite the overall emotional turmoil, however, Gutierrez ended her interview on a high note, sharing that despite not ultimately winning the title, she did manage to make history, which she added is "more important than winning the Miss Universe title."
