National Weather Service Grand Rapids: EF-1 Tornado Struck Kentwood

The damage from a thunderstorm that roared through Kentwood and Wyoming on Sunday night was caused largely by a tornado, according to the National Weather Service. (Photo: WZZM-13)

That wind and rain buried in a thunderstorm Sunday night that struck Kentwood just before 10:30 p.m. included a tornado, National Weather Service Grand Rapids meteorologist Brandon Hoving said.

Update (3 p.m.): The National Weather Service said the tornado was an EF-1, with peak winds of 100 to 110 miles per hour. The tornado, which injured six people, cut a swath of 300 to 400 yards wide near Cutlerville, Wyoming and Kentwood and lasted for about 10 minutes. It touched down at 10:20 p.m. at about 2 miles west of Cutlerville at 64th Street SW and Burlingame Avenue SW in Byron Township and ended at 10:30 p.m. at Breton Road and 28th Street SE.

In a statement just issued, Hoving said a National Weather Service survey conducted this morning “concluded that a tornado touched down in Kentwood last night.”

Consumers Energy said this morning that about 20,000 electricity customers lost power, with about 9,600 of those in Kent County, including Wyoming and Kentwood. The Jackson-based utility said it could be until late Tuesday before power is fully restored.

The American Red Cross of West Michigan has opened a temporary Kentwood shelter at Kentwood Activities Center, 355 48th St. SE for affected people.
