New Movies This Week: ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘And So It Goes,’ ‘Road to Paloma,’ ‘Land Ho!’ and ‘Boyhood’ [Video]
Hold onto your butts this weekend at the movies!
With summer in full swing, the five -- that's right, five -- new releases are packed with action, terror and plenty of big laughs (and a little heart, too, if you’re into that kind of thing).
Of course, looming over the quintet is a sequel prequel in the third series of "Planet of the Apes" movies.
'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species. This is the prequel, if you will, to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." It has nothing to do with Tim Burton's 2001 reboot "Planet of the Apes." That was trying to revive the late 1960s-early 1970s series: 1968's "Planet of the Apes," 1970's "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," 1971's "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," 1972's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" and 1973's "Battle for the Planet of the Apes." Pierre Boulle wrote the screenplay for all four of those movies and the story for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." (See more about 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' here.)
