Tanger Outlets in Byron Township offers plenty of shopping options, but food options have been scarce since the day Tanger Outlets opened in Byron Center.

A new proposal could be the beginning of big changes near the mall.

Architectural Concepts has requested a special land use and site plan review for the property located at 509 Alles Dr. in Byron Township.

They would like to build a Culver's restaurant at the location.

Byron Township Supervisor Tom Hooker told me the Culver's project was tabled by the Byron Township Planning Commission on May 21. It will be up for consideration at the Planning Commission meeting on June 18. If approved, the project will then head to the full Byron Township Board.

Culver's seems like a good fit. When shopping works up your appetite you've got some quick food available. You've also got the option of some frozen custard. It's a two-for-one.

Culver's frozen custard is good, but locals will be the first to tell you that a short drive down 84th St. and into Byron Center will bring you even more delicious frozen treats at Houseman's Ice Cream. There are also more places to eat in town, but the desire is to have places closer to the outlet mall and it seems likely we'll see plenty of new restaurants and businesses near 84th St. and US-131 in the not-to-distant future.

I'm holding my breath hoping a couple of regional chains decide to open their second West Michigan-area locations at the mall. Leo's Coney Island and Giordano's come to mind. I'm buying elastic waist jeans at the mall and starting a diet in anticipation of the possibility.

What type of restaurant or which chain would you like to see open near Tanger Outlets?
