With Finding Dory breaking all kinds of box office records, fans are understandably excited to see which of their favorite franchises Pixar will bring back to multiplexes. And the answer is, it kind of depends. If you’re a fan of CarsToy Story, and The Incredibles, you’ll be able to revisit your favorite Pixar characters no later than 2019. And if you’re a fan of WALL-ERatatouille, or Inside Out... well, we hope you’re OK with waiting for the next decade or so.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (via /Film), Pixar president Jim Morris discussed his company’s slate of upcoming films.

Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on …  Everything after Toy Story and The Incredibles is an original right now.

In other words, a big part of Pixar’s business model is to let individual creative talents oversee a franchise from start to finish. This means that the studio has to be very deliberate in how they map out their release schedule to ensure that everyone has the freedom necessary to develop and produce their own projects. If it takes a filmmaker three-to-five years to develop a project, then this has the effect of staggering which franchise sequels are possible at any given time.

Still, good things come to those who wait, and I think we can all agree that a Pixar sequel that is not rushed into development beats countless other sequels that are greenlit on the Monday after opening weekend. We appreciate Pixar taking the time to do it right.
