Even though I'm diabetic and shouldn't really have Cupcakes and Twinkies and Ding Dongs and Apple Pies and.....(geez what am I? Homer Simpson? Mmmmmmm....Twinkies...) I still love em all! So sweet and tasty and now, soon to be much harder to find, in not impossible. The company that makes and sells the iconic snack cake line has filed for bankruptcy, will be closing it's doors and ceasing operations of the Hostess and Wonder bread brands.

Hostess went into bankruptcy protection in 2009, but a union strike has crippled the company and when a deadline yesterday passed with no resolution, the company was forced to shut their doors. In the CNN story "Hostess Brands closing for good" the company CEO Gregory Rayburn said

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," Rayburn went on to say in an interview on CNBC "The industry has overcapacity. We're overcapacity. Our rivals are overcapacity." Asked if the shutdown decision could be reversed if the Bakers' union agreed to immediately return to work, he responded, "Too late."

Sad....very sad day in food history in this country. I bet Sara Lee or Little Debbies will pick the brand up. The name is too valuable to just die.
