November 10, 1975-The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
If you have spent anytime in Michigan, November 10, 1975 is a date you know. It was 37 years ago today that the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior. While the ship is far from the only to have sunk in Lake Superior (since 1816 that number is 240) it’s easily the most famous. Not many shipwrecks have a chart topping song written about them as well.
Gordon Lightfoot’s most recognizable song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” hauntingly went to number 2 in November 1976, a year after the wreck. With Superstorm Sandy pounding the East Coast last week, the scene of the Fitzgerald’s demise was eerily replayed. Hurricane force winds over 98 MPH pounded the big boat until it sank right after 7pm.
And enjoy Gordon Lightfoot’s living history lesson.
