Gary Richrath, guitarist for the band REO Speedwagon has passed away. Although not an original member of the group, he was responsible for writing some of their biggest hits.

Richrath recently rejoined the band after leaving in 1989. He was 65 years old.

The band shared the news of Richrath's passing late Sunday on their Facebook page, no cause of death was mentioned.

Richrath wrote many of the band's more well known hits, including 'Ridin' The Storm Out', 'Take It On The Run' and 'Only The Strong Survive'.

Gary joined the band in 1970 in his hometown of Peoria, Illinois. he replaced Steev Scarfina, who had replaced original guitarist Joe Matt early in the group's existence.

It was Richrath who was know for his blazing guitar solos and high energy during REO Speedwagon's live shows, which helped propel the band to stardom, first on rock radio stations, and later on pop stations, as the band achieved national recognition.

Their live album, Live: You Get What You Play For, was certified platinum and was the breakout album for the band.

Their CMT Crossroads episode co-starring country singer Sara Evans was scheduled to air this weekend on the cable channel.
