Apparently, Scrabble has dumbed itself down. Like a LOT! Last week, the popular board game added more than 6,500 words to their Collins Official Scrabble Wordlist, and some of them are barely words.

According to a Collins dictionary blogpost, the words were “influenced by all parts of life including social media, slang, technology and food, plus English from around the world," which means now it’s okay to use things like “emoji” “hashtag” and “twerking” against the Scrabble braniac in your family.

While the new words will be acceptable for layman, it won’t be until September that professional players can use them because that’s when they’ll be adopted into the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association.

So what other new words (or parts of words) made the cut this year? Believe it or not, “ridic,” “lolz” “augh,” “beezy,” “blech,” “checkbox,” “eew,” “facetime,” “grr,” “obvs,” “schvitz,” “shizzle,” “vape” and “onesie," are all now acceptable for games. All we have to say is "ARGH."

I guess all new words have to start somewhere, but some of these are not gonna stick, so why should we use them? I think Scrabble just got dumber than Words with Friends.

Are you surprised at the words added to the Scrabble dictionary? Will you start incorporating these words into your game? Or are you a purist and refuse to dumb it down?
