BREAKING NEWS: Van Halen Cancels Last Leg Of Tour Including Grand Rapids, Detroit.
Van Halen has cancelled the last part of their North American tour, including shows in Detroit and at Van Andel here in Grand Rapids. No word on refunds, or why the tour has been halted after the June 26th show in New Orleans. Pollstar.com reports "Individual market announcements regarding postponements began today. Newspapers in Salt Lake City and El Paso reported that promoters didn’t offer explanations for the bad news."
WFGR Artist Donna Summer Dead-TMZ
Sad news to pass along, according to TMZ, Donna Summer has passed away at 63. She had been suffering from breast cancer for the past year or so, but hadn't let on the extent of her illness. The "Queen of Disco" was in Florida at the time of her death working on a new cd. RIP Donna!
Ted Williams Loves The Afternoon Hustle! (And Is An Author)
Remember Ted Williams? The homeless guy with the golden tones? He still has some of those voice over jobs he got last year when he was discovered on the side of the road in Columbus, Ohio (Kraft Macaroni and Cheese...You Know you Love It) But now he's an author, too!
More Grand Rapids Love! We Have One Of America’s “Best Carousels”!
Well, the Grand Rapids Public Museum does! According to Travel+Leisure magazine, the "Grand Rapids Museum Carousel, MI" is the 14th best carousel in the US! Again, Grand Rapids just keeps getting better and better! I wonder if there will be a population explosion in West Michigan soon. It seems like every week there's a new article or survey that just cements what we already know by living here: Grand Rapids is a pretty freakin' cool place to be!
Grand Rapids One Of America’s Best Cities For Moms!
Happy belated Mothers' Day! Here's another feather in the national cap that is Grand Rapids. Along with San Jose and Honolulu, Grand Rapids is one of "America's Best Cities For Moms"! Grand Rapids scores high for moms with "Moms-per-capita" (we are third out of the 13th best), "Maternity care" and "Mom Love" (whatever THAT is).
It’s National Chicken Dance Day! Cluck Says “Find Someone To Dosie Doh”!
Yes, proving that there is a "National" day for everything in this country, today is "National Chicken Dance Day". It's almost like Christmas for Cluck, the WFGR Mascot. He gets to dance and carry on all day today! Go Cluck! So grab someone and do some dancin'!
West Michigan Weather – I Remember the Worst Weather Event In West Michigan History
With Michigan Severe Weather Awareness Week come and gone (It was in April, when we were back to reality after the warm March) The date of May 13, 1980 will always stick with me. It's one of the worst weather days in West Michigan History. The "Kalamazoo Tornado" hit 32 years ago this weekend. I was in elementary school and my class was a roller skating rink in Portage.
WFGR Wins…And Loses At Spellebration!
The spelling-challenged team from 98.7 won and lost at the 19th annual Spellebration at the Thousand Oaks Country Club Wednesday night. The awards honoring spelling tutors and supporters for the Literacy Center of West Michigan was highlighted by the annual celebrity spelling bee. Matt and myself started out slowly (one of few misspelled words by the champs from WZZM) and got...slower. We finished...
Blast From The Past–The Weekly World News!
Growing up, one of those indelible images I have is the "Elvis seen in Kalamazoo Burger King" story in the Weekly World News. You remember THE supermarket tabloid. The National Enquirer might have had more publicity for taking on celebs, but NO paper could top the Weekly World News for sheer "Hey Martha" factor. "Hey Martha" is the phrase the tabloids use to determine if a story will get people to buy the paper. "Hey Martha, look at that three headed boy on the cover, I have to see if that's true".
It’s National Receptionists Day! Here’s Theresa, OUR Receptionist!
Or as she likes to put it, "Director of First Impressions!" And it's so true! She is the first person you see or talk to if you come into the WFGR Offices downtown, or call our office line to complain about what Cluck did on someone's yard. Theresa is also the holder of the prizes, so if you have won something, she's the one to be nice to!
Mayor’s Bike Ride Is Tonight!
"Bicycle...Bicycle...I wanna ride my bicycle...I wanna ride my bike"--Freddie Mercury, Queen
It's the 4th annual Mayor Bike Ride tonight! 6:30 starting at the Plaster Creek Trailhead at the Kroc Salvation Army center on Division. It's fun for all ages, with cool prizes and a chance to ride your bike with the mayor! There's two ride options-2 or 6 mile rides-with appearances from the Grand Rapids Griffins mascot Griff and more!
