The Jojo Show

Jojo Girard hosts “The Jojo Show.”

Born into a working-class Irish family in Saginaw, Mich., Jojo Girard learned how to talk at an early age, and hasn’t shut up since.

Challenged by Sister Margaret at Cathedral High School, Jojo set out to prove to her that her admonishment that “you’ll never make a living making prank phone calls and listening to that rock and roll music” was wrong.

After brief careers as an auto worker, a truck driver and a fast-food burger chef, Jojo enrolled at Central Michigan University, hoping to find his way as a commercial artist. Following several shifts at the college radio station, he changed his major to broadcasting and was soon waking up the cows in Gaylord, Mich., at country station WATC.

The next stop was Mexico, where he woke up the San Diego market from Tijuana’s high-powered XHRM-FM, a groundbreaking station that helped pioneer the freestyle music format which broke such acts as Exposé and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.

When it came time to have kids, Jojo quickly decided the drug war-riddled Mexico really wasn’t the place to raise them, so he moved to West Michigan. While manning morning drive on 104.5 Sunny FM, he became known for taking listeners on adventures like sky diving and bungee jumping.

While on vacation in Maryland, Jojo was offered the morning a lot at Mix 106.5 in Baltimore, where he finally made Sister Margaret eat her words, as his “birthday wake-up call” pranks on unsuspecting listeners became well known.

After 18 years, Jojo was let go. He taught college for a spell as program director in Columbia, Md., for Howard Community College’s online radio station The Dragon.

That was before returning home to Michigan last spring to take over the early hours once again at 98.7 WFGR.

Jojo has three grown daughters, who are spread out over the world, from Los Angeles and Pittsburgh to Shanghai in China.

He currently lives in northeast Grand Rapids with his TV remote.
