Stretches of Michigan roads will see a speed limit increase on Monday, May 1st. The speed limit increases will be on select stretches of freeway and non-freeway corridors.

About 10 freeways will see an increase in the speed limit of 5 MPH to 75 MPH.  A few dozen non-freeway corridors will also see a speed increase to 65 MPH.  You can find a complete list of the speed increases on MDOT's website.

MDOT and the Michigan State Police have increased the speed limits "based on the results of engineering and safety studies that utilize the 85th-percentile speeds (the speed at or below which 85 percent of traffic is moving)."

It may take some time to change all of the speed limit signs throughout the state, so keep an eye out for aluminum or plywood numbers applied over existing signs.
