State College Football Predictions, Week 7: Time To Choose, Are You Gonna Be Crappy Or Not?
After a 5-1 run last Saturday made me feel good about myself, this week leaves me feeling dread as several state teams need to show their true colors or write this season off.
.Several teams, including Michigan State and Central, are at the crossroads of being good teams or being crappy. Which way will they go?
Really? Could you imagine Jim Harbaugh drunk? Good Lord, you think he's intense now, wait to you see him after shots! He'd be yelling at the waiter to give him ten push ups. Of course Jim Harbaugh drinks milk. He knows himself too well.
On with the picks...
Northwestern (2-3) at Michigan State (2-3) -- Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, Saturday 3:30pm
Sparty fans were not real happy last week when the realization hit them that this is not a real good football team. The good news is neither is Northwestern, who stumble in after giving Iowa their best shot this year, losing on the road 38-31. This is where the rubber meets the road for Sparty. Get up and start kicking ass now, or roll over and hope for the best next season. Otherwise Mark Dantonio will start drinking, and it won't be milk.
MSU 34, NW 28
Western Michigan (6-0) at Akron (4-2) -- InfoCision Field, Akron OH, Saturday 3:30pm
The Broncos are the darlings of the Mid-Majors after dismantling NIU last week during Homecoming. But that win exposed a lot of shortcomings the Broncos have, and hopefully they're not feeling too full of themselves. Akron leads the East Division of the MAC right now, so this is potentially a preview of the MAC Championship in December. Row The Boat, boys, an undefeated season is on the horizon.
WMU 40, Akron 24
Central Michigan (4-2) at Northern Illinois (1-5) -- Huskie Stadium, DeKalb IL, Saturday 3:30pm
The Chippewas giving three points on the road at NIU is a shaky bet to say the least, as the Huskies aren't as bad as their record indicates and the Chippewas have yet to decide how good they want to be. I really feel iffy about picking the Chips,as NIU has resurrected its offense with versatile Anthony Mackie at QB, and the Chips defense giving up big chunks of real estate at times this season.
CMU 22, NIU 21
Truman State (5-1) at Grand Valley State (6-0) -- Lubbers Stadium, Allendale, Saturday 7pm
The pride of Kirksville MO Truman State is no joke. They can play, and are a great test to keep the Lakers' heads from getting too big after their win over arch rival Ferris last week. GVSU had better be ready to go because Truman played even with 4th ranked Midwestern State before bowing 31-19 earlier this season. The Lakers defense looked human last week, giving up over 500 yards to Ferris. Here's their chance to be redeemed.
GVSU 34 Truman 22
Northern Michigan (3-3) at Ferris State (4-2) -- Topp Taggert Field, Big Rapids, Saturday 1pm
Even in losing to GVSU last week, Ferris looked good at times, as they moved the ball fairly efficiently against one of the best defenses in D-II. Northern started strong, but looked awful disappointing losing to Saginaw Valley last week. Here's where the ships pass, Ferris headed upstream, Northern headed down.
Ferris 45, NMU 20
Davenport (4-2) at St. Francis (2-4) -- Joliet memorial Stadium, Joliet IL, Saturday 1pm
It's been a pretty successful first season of football at Davenport, and it should continue this week. The Fighting Saints have a great QB in Don Butkus, but their defense can be leaky at times, and the Panthers should be able to squeak by on the road.
