Wee Difference for October: Safe Haven Ministries

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

With that in mind, 98.7 WFGR has named Safe Haven Ministries, of Grand Rapids, as its Wee Difference charity for the month of October.

Since 1990, Safe Haven has been helping women and children find freedom from domestic violence.

ArtPrize 2014: What’s Going On September 30 [Video]

The ArtPrize jurors' shortlists were announced Monday night for the sixth annual ArtPrize.

That means 16 juried finalists are in. The public vote continues, meanwhile, with first-round voting running through 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Today (Tuesday, Sept. 30) is the seventh day of the 19-day public art exhibition, which runs through Oct. 12 in Grand Rapids.

Nearly 170,000 votes had been cast as of 8 a.m. today in first-round public voting, according to ArtPrize's vote tabulations.

The public voting helps determine a $200,000 grand prize winner, with another $200,000 grand prize selected from the jurors' shortlists.

ArtPrize 2014: What’s Going On September 29 [Video]

The sixth annual ArtPrize is well under way.

Today (Monday, Sept. 29) is the sixth day of the 19-day public art exhibition, which runs through Oct. 12 in Grand Rapids.

More than 146,000 votes had been cast as of 8 a.m. today in first-round public voting, according to ArtPrize's vote tabulations. Round One voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Oct. 4.

The voting helps determine a $200,000 grand prize winner, with another $200,000 grand prize selected by a juried panel of art critics.

The Artists of ArtPrize: Passion, Faith And Innovation

I had heard many things about the annual ArtPrize competition. It was described to me as "crazy", "crowded" and "fun". But none of those terms came close to what I encountered in my first stroll into ArtPrize venues Friday night.

What I discovered was a massive art exhibit that gave the art fanatic an added twist, the chance to meet the artist and talk with them about their inspirations, their techniques and their lives. I found out that not only do artists love to talk, they are extremely passionate about their projects, and that made me view their art in a different light.

Body Found at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids

 

UPDATE 2:20 PM: According to WZZM-13, Police say the body found on the west side of the Grand River, north of Ann Street and near northbound U.S. 131. is that of a 58 year-old -homeless man.

Neighbors tell WZZM that the park used to be known as Ann Street Park. They also reported recently seeing homeless people camping at the park and called police about the issue.

12:57 PM: WZZM-13 is reporting that police are headed to the scene of a body found in Riverside Park in Grand Rapids.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Rocking On for ‘Ride Out,’ with Dec. 9 Concert at Van Andel Arena

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band announced this morning they will hit the road in support of Seger’s first new studio album in eight years, "Ride Out," with a tour supporting it opening in mid-November in Michigan with a Dec. 9 date at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Also appearing in Grand Rapids with Seger & The Silver Bullet Band is The J. Geils Band.

"Ride Out," Seger's first studio album in eight years, is being released Oct. 14.

ArtPrize 2014: What’s Going On Sept. 25

There are 1,537 artist entries from 42 U.S. states and 51 countries at ArtPrize 2014, which opened Wednesday. With the combination of a public vote and juried honors, the sixth annual event is awarding $560,000 in prizes.

For the public vote, voting began at noon and round one closes at 11:59 p.m. Oct. 4, with the public vote finalists announced at 1 p.m. Oct. 2. Round two voting starts at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 with winner announced Oct. 9.

More than 13,000 votes had been cast by midnight Wednesday, according to ArtPrize's vote tabulations.

Today (Thursday, Sept. 25) is the second day of the 19-day public art exhibition, which runs through Oct. 12 in Grand Rapids.
