Groucho Marx introduced him for the first time, even though Ed McMahon was the sidekick, as he was for all 50 years of the show. The Tonight Show started in 1954 with Steve Allen as host, but it was Johnny who took it over and made it "Carson"

September 26th is always an auspicious day in television history. 2 iconic TV shows made their debut today! One started as a witty, urbane nightly collection of music, comedy and variety. Broadcast live every night 48 weeks a year for 90 minutes nightly, the Tonight Show was NBC's answer to the aptly-named Today Show. When they added the Tomorrow Show, the peacock network had the whole day wrapped up!
