With drones being one of the hot items for Christmas this year, the Federal Aviation Administration has announced new regulations that will require that the mini-aircraft be registered and marked with their registration numbers.

A head honcho at the FAA correctly pointed out that most drone operators have “little or no aviation experience.” Which is scary because there might be 700,000 new drone owners by the time Santa heads back to the North Pole.

That’s a lot of little airplanes with a lot of little cameras flying around. You’ve got privacy concerns. You’ve got commercial airline concerns. You’ve even got terrorism concerns.

So for now, under the new regulations, drone operators will be required to register their unmanned aircraft and apply their registration number to the drone. But luckily for these new “pilots” an FAA registration website is expected to be operating by December 21st.

This government website will, for sure, launch and run smoothly – like all the websites the government has created.

This is a great example of technology and public opinion being so far ahead of the government that they’re going to need time to catch up. Drones and the legalization of marijuana must be keeping lawmakers very, very busy.

Remember in the good old days when we were all excited to get remote controlled CARS under the Christmas tree? They didn’t have cameras. They didn’t require registration with a government agency. And, they were fun. At least, we thought they were fun. Maybe they weren’t?
