Are you stuck in a dead end job and looking to make a change? Well, if that’s the case, you may want to pay attention to the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report, which has come out with their annual ranking of the best jobs out there.

The rankings are based on the predictions of growth in fields between 2012 and 2022 determined by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Statistics.  The top jobs in different industries were then judged on factors like possible job prospects, unemployment rates, salary and job satisfaction.

Unfortunately, nabbing one of these may require some, well, a lot, more schooling, because seven out of the Top Ten are actually in the healthcare field.

  1. Dentist – While not many of us would like to stick our hands in other people’s mouths, dentists certainly get paid well to do it. The average salary is $164,570 a year, with a median salary of $146,340. It also has a low unemployment rate of 0.9, and between 2012 and 2022 it is predicted that as many as 23,300 new jobs will be opening.
  2. Nurse Practitioner – It is predicted that there will be as many as 37,000 new openings in this field, with hiring in high demand.
  3. Software Developer – Last year’s number one, a software developer is still a coveted gig amongst IT jobs, with an annual average salary above $96,000, and more than 139,000 job openings predicted by 2022.
  4. Physician – Job openings for doctors are expected to increase nearly 18 percent between 2012 and 2022, especially if you’re willing to work in rural and low-income areas. It also has very low unemployment, with an average salary of $188,440.
  5. Dental Hygienist – The BLS predicts a 33.3 percent increase in jobs for dental hygienists, sparked by America’s vanity and desire to keep our teeth healthier than previous generations.
  6. Physical Therapist - Jobs are expected to grow 36 percent, with increasing amounts of qualified physical therapists needed to help the aging baby boomer generation.
  7. Computer Systems Analyst – These IT project managers are in high demand, with the BLS predicting a 24.5 increase in employment growth.
  8. Information Security Analyst – With the increasing concern over internet security, the BLS predicts jobs in this field will grow at a rate of 36.5 percent.
  9. Registered Nurse – With an unemployment rate of just two percent and more than 525,000 jobs expected to be available between 2012 and 2022 it’s no wonder registered nurses made it into the top ten.
  10. Physician Assistant – Medical professionals who take the place of busy doctors allow more patients to be seen which is a good thing. For this reason the BLS predicts a 38.4 percent increase in available jobs.
