In his epic song about the sinking of the Great Lakes freighter, the Edmund Fitzgerald, Canadian song writer Gordon Lightfoot immortalized the phrase 'Gales of November' to describe the high winds that sweep Michigan's northernmost lake this time of year.

This weekend, the high winds pushed the waves to 18 feet off the coast of Marquette, and that meant one thing to some guys in Marquette -- SURF'S UP!!!

I've seen some extreme sports in my time, but I think more time must be spent analyzing the brains of these dudes, who pull out their longboards to go surfing when the wind chill is pushing the high teens.

Check out this video out as YouTuber RT Kruse catches a group of over a dozen brave surfers hopping waves Friday afternoon near Marquette. The best shot comes at the 1:50 mark when there's a great shot of a guy getting a good ride on a ten foot wave.

(WARNING -- musical soundtrack has a couple of cuss words!!)

Surfers were not to be seen the following day when 18 foot waves pounded the Black Rocks north of Marquette. These rocks are usually inhabited by daring cliff divers during the summer months, but they are nowhere to be found in this video.
