With the good news of new development, comes the bad news of a staple along Bridge Street NW in Grand Rapids closing their doors.

The Duthler’s Family Food Store will be closing August 18th. According to WZZM who spoke with managers and employees at the west side store, the owners decided not to renew their lease.

A few weeks back, we talked about the new Meijer store being built at Bridge and Stocking, and as the new development moves in, including New Holland building the Knickerbocker and other businesses wanting to be in that area, the rent prices have continually gone up.

Unfortunately, that also pushes the residents who frequented the grocery store out of the neighborhood.  Between a shrinking customer base and rent hikes, it's made it hard for the store to remain profitable.

What’s sad is seeing the employees on the news, crying, because you can tell this store was a part of the Bridge Street neighborhood.

WZZM says the Duthler’s store on Hall Street at the intersection of Madison Ave, will still be open.
