Years ago, when I patrolled the air waves at 104.5 Sunny FM, I stumbled across a video of a young comic on MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour talking about an elderly hockey goalie who stubbornly refused to allow a goal in his final game.

The bit, called 'The Gamper', became a mainstay of my show back then, so this morning I brought it back and was surprised how many of you remembered it.

The comic I later found out was a guy named John Ten Eyck, who was a writer for the classic MTV game show 'Remote Control' which was hosted by Ken Ober.

Because of the popularity of the bit, I was given the opportunity to drive the Zamboni at a Ferris Sate game in Big Rapids, and even had a short stint as a goalie in a Lumberjack-Red Wing alumni game at Walker Arena.

After I left 104.5 for the East Coast, I left behind a copy, which DJs at Rock 101.7 continuted to play. The bit was played at Muskegon Fury and Lumberjack games on occasion and became synonymous with West Michigan hockey.

My efforts to contact Ten Eyck have fallen short so far, but it is my goal to one day have him on to talk about how his routine became a routine for many hockey fans from Muskegon to Big Rapids to Grand Rapids.

In memory of the late Gump Worsley, the last NHL goalie not to wear a mask.
