University of Michigan defensive end Frank Clark has been dismissed from the Michigan football team after being accused of domestic violence in Ohio over the weekend.

Coach Brady Hoke has called the situation "tragic".

Clark, 21, pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of assault and domestic violence. Police were called to a motel on Saturday, and have released photos showing bruising on the face and neck of the alleged victim, 20-year-old Diamond Hurt.

Clark has a criminal history, as well. In 2012, he was arrested for stealing a laptop from a dorm room. He was sentenced under a law that cleared the felony from his record after he completed probation.

On Monday afternoon, Michigan Coach Brady Hoke released the following statement:

Frank Clark has been dismissed for violating team rules from the Michigan football program. This is a tragic situation. Our student-athletes will be held accountable when their actions fail to meet the standard we have at Michigan. There is a legal process that will occur and we respect that process."
