Never in his four seasons has head coach has Jim Harbaugh ever named a starting quarterback before the season opener. Until now. Is this a sign of the coming apocalypse?

Patterson was the odds on favorite since transferring to Michigan from Mississippi last winter. He was competing with last year's starter, Brandon Peters and redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffery. The decision also means true freshman Joe Milton will probably redshirt this season.

Patterson gained a lot of publicity for his throwing ability at Old Miss, where he tossed for over 3300 yards and 23 touchdowns, but he sat out much of last season with a knee injury. He transferred to Michigan following a scandal at Mississippi which forced out their head coach, Hugh Freeze.

Michigan defensive players have spoken glowingly of Patterson's performances in pre-season practices, saying his ability to run under pressure makes him tough to contain.

Harbaugh has been reluctant to name his starter in any of his previous seasons at Michigan, leaving the press and fans wondering who would get reps under center.

Harbaugh made the announcement during the M Club's press luncheon. He also addressed the issue on his 'Attack Each Day' podcast that he co-hosts with his dad, Jack.

"I think we all see it that Shea is the best and gives our team the best chance to win," Harbaugh said on his podcast. Former Michigan player Grant Newsome added, "It's really impressive what Shea's been able to do."
