I know it's late into the winter season, but it seems like people still need some remiding on how to properly drive in winter weather.  Over 1,300 people are killed annually during snowy, and icy road conditions and those conditions also cause over 116,000 accidents.

That's why we put together this checklist and list of driving tips for winter driving.

Winter Driving Checklist:

  • Make sure the snow on your car is completely wiped off (this includes your roof, headlights, and brake lights in addition to your windows.)
  • Make sure you have windshield wiper fluid.
  • Make sure your gas tank is at least half full.
  • Have winter clothing and blanket in your car.
  • Have a shovel and bag of salt.
  • Have a Car Emergency Kit.
  • Make sure your battery is working properly and bring jumper cables just in case.
  • Make sure your tires are in working order.
  • Make sure your phone is charged in case of emergency.

And now that you have gone through the checklist, you are ready to get out on the hazardous roads.  But, be sure you follow these driving tips when you are out!

Winter Driving Tips:

  • Drive slower than normal in hazardous conditions.
  • Put extra distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Turn on your headlights if it is snowing.
  • Do not slam on your brakes to avoid sliding.
  • Accelerate and Decelerate slowly to avoid slipping.
  • Be careful driving up and down hills in icy conditions.
  • Check road conditions via the MDOT Road Condition Map.
  • If you do get into an accident, be sure to move your car out of the road if possible.  And do not get out of your car until you are safely away from other traffic.
