Two West Michigan children were flown to the hospital via Aero Med after police say their 27-year-old mother committed suicide.

Police were called to the area of Lincoln Lake Rd. and 18 Mile Saturday morning after they received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the woods. When they arrived, they discovered a Grand Rapids woman on the ground with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her three-year-old daughter was lying on top of her, and her five-month-old son was found in his carseat in the car.

The little girl was suffering from hypothermia, and upon arriving at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, doctors discovered that she also had a bullet fragment in her head and they rushed her to surgery.

Police believe the little girl's wound was accidental, and a result of the gunshot that killed her mother.
