It’s almost fall and you know what that means – Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back. The company admits that the hot drink “still ranks as their most popular seasonal beverage,” but they are less than forthcoming about what’s in it.

I will preface this by saying when you try and learn what's in a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, things get very weird.

In fact, Foodbabe.com discovered it is nearly impossible to find out what ingredients are actually in a Starbucks drink. While the store does list ingredients for some items on their websites, they don’t for beverages, and repeated email requests only received vague answers in return.

Anyway, somehow the site finally got the actual ingredient list and it may make you reconsider ordering that Venti next time you’re in the store.

  • First off, let’s get this out of the way, the drink contains no real pumpkin, not that that’s at all surprising. The pumpkin spice syrup that makes the drink so yummy contains Carmel Color Level IV, which contains ammonia and is considered a carcinogen.
  •  The milk used at Starbucks is “Monsanto Milk” which is from cows fed GMO corn, soy and cottonseed. And their Soymilk contains stabilizers linked to cancer.
  • There’s a good reason that drink is so sweet, it contains huge amounts of sugar, over 50 grams if you order a Grande.
  • There are also ambiguous natural flavors, artificial flavors and condensed milk that will make your drink not vegan even if you use soymilk. And then there are preservatives, sulfates and pesticides from non-organic coffee beans.

Yeah, I didn’t need to know that. Ignorance is bliss, now I’ll take a Grande please!
