The West Michigan Whitecaps are still alive in their quest to win their second straight Midwest League championship.

In a game that took two days to play because of severe thunderstorms, the Whitecaps won the deciding game over the South Bend Cubs, 4-3, to move on to the East Division Finals.

Severe thunderstorms rolled in late during Friday's game, which was tied 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning.

The Whitecaps had a runner on first, and Jose Azocar at the plate when the game was suspended.

The game resumed Saturday afternoon at 4:05pm at Four Winds Field in South Bend. The Whitecaps and Cubs eventually went into extra innings before the Whitecaps won the game in the top of the tenth inning when Azocar singled in Will Allen with one out.

Mark Ecker then got the save in the bottom of the tenth by getting Cubs slugger Matt Rose to fly out to right with a runner on first.

The Whitecaps will host game two of the best of three Eastern Finals Monday night at 6:35pm at Fifth Third Park. Tickets are available now. They will also host a game three, if necessary, Tuesday night at 6:35pm.
