For the West Michigan Whitecaps, it's been an unlikely run to the Eastern Division title. After struggling in the first half of the season, the Caps came alive in the second half and have been on fire ever since. Last night, they advanced to the Midwest League title series.

The Whitecaps put up their best offensive showing of the season, piling up 14 runs on 22 hits in a 14-5 rout of the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law Stadium in Lansing to clinch their first Eastern Division title since 2007 on Monday night.

The win propels the Caps into the Midwest League Championship Series against the Cedar Rapids Kernals beginning Wednesday at Fifth Third Park. Game time is 6:35 pm. The League Championship Series is best of five games. Game two will also be at Fifth Third on Thursday night. The Whitecaps will be seeking their sixth Midwest League championship.

Christin Stewart led the Caps' big win Monday with 4 hits and two runs batted in. Francisco Contreras and David Gonzalez helped ice the Lugnuts with back to back doubles in a five run seventh inning that slammed the door on the Lansing team.
