Western Michigan University announced that they will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in "Sustainable Craft Brewing". The degree was approved by the University's board of trustees this week.

Cheryl Roland, executive director of university relations told the campus newspaper, The Western Herald, the plans for the program are being finalized and the timing of when the program will be offered will be announced once that's completed.

The brewing major will be offered in conjunction with Kalamazoo Valley Community College, which will also offer a two year program in craft brewing.

Central Michigan University announced in 2014that they will begin offering degrees in what they call "fermentation sciences" starting with the Fall 2015 semester.

The program is a perfect fit in a West Michigan community that has embraced the craft beer phenomenon. Grand Rapids has been named one of the nation's hotbeds of the art by numerous national publications and earning the title of "Beer City USA" in 2013. Kalamazoo, home of WMU, is also home to two well renowned craft breweries, Bell's and Arcadia, both of whom are said to be involved in the project.
