25 New COVID-19 Outbreaks In Michigan Schools Brings Total To 218
The total number of COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan schools is down for only the second time since the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) started to report outbreaks.
On Monday, MDHHS reported 25 new COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan schools and administrative buildings, bringing the total ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks to 218. Last week, the total number of outbreaks was 267, which was up 7 from the previous week.
The ongoing outbreaks include several that have began on September 14th and others that have been much more recent.
The new outbreaks include 16 pre-school and elementary schools, 4 junior highs or middle schools, 2 high schools, and 3 administrator buildings.
For the most part, the trend has been of COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan schools has been declining with new outbreaks only totaling 25 this week, which was down from 34 last week, which was down 35 from the week before, and down from over 50 the week prior to that. This downward trend of new infections is in part to more and more schools going to virtual learning as well as the "Pause to Save Lives" order, that has all high schools, colleges, and universities conducting remote learning.
As far as whether students or faculty are accounting for the bulk of the positive cases, it is unclear but appears to be a mixed bag. The way the state reports the positive cases is only whether they are from students, staff, or both. So, if there are 10 cases at a school and it affects both students and staff (listed as both), it does not determine how many cases are from students vs staff.
