You can help out those in need this Saturday without ever leaving your house.  Well, unless you have to go to the grocery store to buy the stuff.

This Saturday, May 11th, is the national STAMP OUT HUNGER food drive with the United States Post Office, through the National Association of Letter Carriers.

So this week, you’ll find a bag in your mailbox that they want you to fill up with non-perishable food and leave at your mailbox on Saturday.  Your letter carrier will drop off your mail and pick up the food, which will be donated to and distributed through Feeding America West Michigan’s network.  They partner with 900 different organizations making sure as many people as possible have food on their tables.

The press release from Feeding America says last year in the Grand Rapids/West Michigan area they collected over 113,000 pounds of food which helps feed around 50,000 of our neighbors.

Again, the food drive is this Saturday and here are a few ways you can help according to the Feeding America press release:

  • Place nonperishable food like cereal, pasta, canned fruits or veggies in bags and leave them by your mailbox in time for your normal mail pickup/delivery on May 11 – 9 a.m. is a safe bet.

  • Volunteer to help sort donated food by visiting feedwm.org/volunteer.

  • Donate at feedwm.org/donate – just $1 provides four meals.
