Right after Mackinac Island is named the top travel destination in the entire country, two Michigan cities are named on the list of best lake towns in the nation.

Thrillist put together a list of America's 20 Greatest Summertime Lake Towns and a pair of Michigan cities made the list.  The “twin towns” of Saugatuck and Douglas sit across Lake Kalamazoo from one another, right on the coast of Lake Michigan.  The two cities share miles of coastline along both lakes, including the popular public beaches Oval Beach and Douglas Beach along lake Michigan.

The two cities also boast of being very LGBTQ friendly with over 140 businesses being LGBTQ-owned.  Thirllist notes that the neighboring cities are "dubbed the Fire Island of the Midwest" because of the gay-friendly atmosphere.

The beaches feature beautiful dunes and never-ending coast lines, great for swimming, lounging, boating, and hiking.  If you are looking for a Pure Michigan destination this summer, these cities could be a fantastic destination for you!

Five other Midwest cities made the list:

  • Door County, Wisconsin
  • Ely, Minnesota
  • Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
  • Put-in-Bay, Ohio
  • Grand Marais, Minnesota

You can find the rest of the list in Thrillist's Travel section of their website.
