Rosa Parks Circle has been under construction since May. The popular Grand Rapids hangout is currently undergoing a $2.8 million renovation which includes lots of upgrades after 21 years of wear and tear.

The plan was that Rosa Parks Circle would be open again in September, just in time for ArtPrize. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. WZZM says the projected reopening date is now sometime in October or November, and granite is what's to blame.

The end date on the project was postponed due to a shipping delay for the granite, which is being transported from California.

The granite is taking much longer than expected to be delivered. It will eventually be used for the seating area of the newly-renovated area.

In addition to a nice new place for people to sit, other upgrades include:

  • Replacing pole lights with LED lights
  • New bathrooms
  • New signs, benches, trees and trails
  • New bus shelter
  • Redesigned stage at the bandshell

Rosa Parks Circle is a popular destination for people to hang and eat, events to take place at, ice skating in the winter, rallies, dancing, exercise groups, etc.

As previously reported, the majority of the money is coming from the city's park mileage and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The remainder is all through private donations.
