It is the rarest of job openings.

For over 20 years, Tom Yackish, a former professor of engineering who retired from Grand Valley State University in 2003, has been the voice of the Laker Marching Band.

GVSU says Yackish has officially retired from his role with the band and auditions are being held to find the next announcer.

Yackish has been heard by thousands at GVSU football games, famously proclaiming “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Pride of the Midwest! The Laker Marching Band!”

Forget filling these shoes. They are too big and won't fit you or anyone else. You have to bring your own shoes to this rare opportunity.

What will it take to be selected?

John Martin, Director of GVSU's Athletic Bands explains:

We are looking for a person who can communicate the excitement and energy of the Laker Marching Band through their voice. Someone who can add their unique touch, such as a vocal moniker that is unique and identifiable to the ‘Voice.' A person who has great interpersonal relationship skills and can immediately adapt to any new changes that may occur before a performance.

Job duties include:

  • Announcing for the marching band at all home football games during the pregame and halftime shows.
  • Announcing at exhibition shows in the fall.
  • Announcing at the annual Laker Marching Band Bandorama concert.
  • Attending Saturday rehearsals before home games.
  • Possibly announcing at select away games.

This is a volunteer position. Auditions are open to anyone. Applications are due by Monday, July 30. Apply here and see all of the audition requirements.

Go Lakers!
