During a week of shocking sports news, add another to the list. You can now put the word "former" in front of Brian Kelly's name when referring to the Head Football Coach of Notre Dame University. Kelly has been named as the new Head Football Coach for LSU.

Where did Kelly begin his coaching career?

Kelly previously served as the head football coach at Grand Valley State University from 1991 to 2003. At GVSU under his watch, The Lakers went 14–0 in 2002 and grabbed their first national title. In 2003, GVSU went 14–1 and they claimed their second National Championship. Kelly was named the AFCA Division II Coach of the Year after each of these championship years.

In his 13 years as head coach at Grand Valley State, the Lakers won five conference titles and made six Division II Playoff appearances. His record at Grand Valley State was 118–35–2. His tenure at GVSU has been his longest stay with any school since his coaching career began.

Did Kelly coach at any other Michigan Schools?

From GVSU, the coach went to another Michigan school, Central Michigan University. He coached there from 2004 to 2006. In his third season, the Chippewas posted a 9–4 record and they won the MAC Championship. Kelly's record at Central Michigan over three seasons was 19–16.

According to ESPN Stats and information and reported by Golf Digest,

"There have only been 12 instances in the last 30 years of a head coach winning at least 11 games in their final season at the helm of a Power 5/AQ school. Of those 12, five coaches left for the NFL, five either retired or resigned due to NCAA violations or scandals, and two took a job at a different program. Those two coaches are Brian Kelly and ... Brian Kelly."

Kelly will receive a 10-year, $95 million contract, plus incentives. He will be formally introduced as the 34th head coach in LSU Football history at a press conference at noon CT on Wednesday.
