Updated Story: The mystery of the bunker built in Rogue River State Game Area has been solved.

After the bunker story was released officials say the mother of a 15-year-old boy called the authorities to say her son and his friends built the bunker for fun.

The DNR will be paying the boys a visit to fill the hole and remove the sandbags from the area. They may be in more trouble for cutting down trees on state land.

It never hurts to get out and do some pre-season scouting when preparing for the next deer hunting season, especially if you are hunting on state land.

It can pay dividends to a hunter who can locate where others hunt to avoid them and have their scent not affect where you plan to hunt. Plus pick out the tree or ground location to set up a stand to be ready for the next hunting season.

I have to tell you that I would be pretty shocked to be scouting deer locations and stumble across a freshly dug bunker that looks like something the military would have put together.

From the looks of the bunker, this definitely took some time and looks to have been made by someone with military training or who really studied how bunkers are made.

The Kent County man who found the bunker according to WOOD-TV asked not to be identified out of concerns a local militia group made the bunker and may retaliate.

The unidentified man who found the bunker did his community service by notifying the United States Department of Homeland Security who told him to contact the FBI, who then passed the buck on to the local police. So the man calls the Michigan State Police who then tell him to contact the Kent County Sheriff's Department who then sends him to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

I am really surprised all those agencies just passed the buck down on taking a look at this bunker to the next agency below them and not putting some time into investigating who might have built this.

Where Is The Bunker Located in the Rogue River State Game Area?

The trail where the bunker was found is not far from where the trail begins on Red Pine Drive which is north of 18 Mile Road NE, just northeast of Kent City. The man who found the bunker says it was very well hidden, it is about a mile hike into the Rogue River State Game Area roughly 50 yards off of a narrow trail with lots of covered trees around it.

Whoever made the bunker, obviously took a lot of time and was done sometime after the frost and as recent as a few weeks ago from the signs of where sticks had fallen. There were more sandbags in the bunker so it looks like whoever built it was not finished yet. Plus they have spent a lot of time there because at one point there was a fire built within the bunker itself.

You can tell by the fresh-cut trees the bunker was a recent build. It is illegal to cut trees on state land even if you are putting up a deer blind. This is definitely not a deer blind since this was made for someone to be shooting at and set up to shoot from.

The bunker is about 15 by 15 feet in size and about 3 feet deep. It has reinforced walls with sandbags and tree branches woven together. The bags are laid out with a perfect shooting rest not to mention the bunker is built on top of a hill that overlooks Spring Creek.

The DNR plans to dismantle the bunker but I sure hope someone takes the time to look into who built this bunker and why. Perhaps there is a doomsday prepper in the area who was expanding their plan in case something were to happen in the future. Hopefully, someone gets to the bottom of this.
