Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Grand Rapids

Today is Cinco de Mayo!

So, what?

I'm not exactly sure what Cinco de Mayo is all about in Mexico, I think it has something to do with some battle.

Here in the US though, the one thing I do know about Cinco de Mayo is that it's an excuse to drink margaritas!

Since we are all compelled to eat and drink Mexican food today, here's a list of some local restaurants where you can get your fiesta on:

1. The Beltline Bar

The Beltline Bar is a Grand Rapids staple. My family and I have been going there to celebrate special occasions for as long as I can remember. We’ve celebrated birthdays, Mothers Days, and that’s where I went for dinner after I graduated college. I absolutely love their house margaritas which are imperative to celebrating Cinco de Mayo. The Beltline Bar is also doing a food drive throughout May: donate a can of a non-perishable food item and receive a free coupon for one of their world famous wet burritos.

2.   El Barrio Mexican Grill

El Barrio is where I go for Mexican food when I want to stay in town. Located over on Michigan St., El Barrio Mexican Grill is owned by the same people who own The Beltline Bar so it’s equally as delicious. They’ve got a good selection of Mexican beers on tap and margaritas as big as your head. I recommend the traditional Mexican style tacos!

3. Taqueria San Jose

If you’re looking for some delicious authentic Mexican food nothing beats Taqueria San Jose. Seriously. The BEST tacos in town. Taqueria San Jose is located down on South Division in an old drive in, so there isn't any dine-in seating. Yes, it’s a little rough around the edges, but the food speaks for itself and the prices are great. Taqueria San Jose offers burritos, tamales, tacos and quesadillas. Don’t forget the hot sauce!

BONUS: Fajita Republic Cantina

I'm not very familiar with Fajita Republic as they're new to town. They opened last month and I haven't had a chance to stop by their location in the Celebration Cinema North Plaza. I figured I'd just let you know that you have a new Mexican joint to choose from! They offer a full menu for carry-out and check out these premium margaritas!
