The sad part of this is that Central Michigan coach John Bonamego is a really good guy, but it's hard to overcome setting a school record in losses.

Central Michigan University was one of the worst teams in the NCAA this season, but they were the first team in one category: firing their head coach. Reports indicate that John Bonamego was let go after the Chippewas 51-13 loss to Toledo.

Bonamego coached four seasons with the Chips, ending with a record of 22-29. He had led the team to three straight bowl games prior to this season. This year, the team won only one game, against Maine, a lower division FCS team back in September. They lost nine straight after that.

Compounding the timing of the firing was a testy game with Toledo, in which two brawls broke out involving the teams.

In a statement published on the school's athletics web site, CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford said:

"Making a leadership change is a difficult decision, especially when you know that coach has given his all to CMU. After conducting a 360-degree evaluation of the program, it was clear that a change is needed if we are going to compete for and win championships.

"We greatly appreciate all that John has done for his alma mater and wish him the best moving forward.”

Prior to coming to CMU, Bonamego ws a highly successful positions coach in the NFL for several teams, including the Detroit Lions.
