Detroit Lions Interested in Colin Kaepernick?

Yesterday, the NFL informed all teams that Colin Kaepernick will be holding a private workout this week. With Matthew Stafford injured, Kaepernick could be a fit for the Detroit Lions.

News of the workout was reported Tuesday afternoon. Kaepernick will hold an on-field workout in Atlanta on Saturday. There will also be an interview. Video of both will be made available to all teams.

With a potentially serious back injury to Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions could be interested in bringing Kaepernick to the team to compete for playing time. Lions coach Matt Patricia has said Stafford is week-to-week, but with broken bones in his back, it's an injury which could leave Stafford on the sidelines for much longer.

Lions backup quarterback Jeff Driskel was okay filling in for Stafford on Sunday. Driskel went 27/46 for 269 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 37 yards and threw one pretty bad interception. It's possible Driskel will continue to be the Lions quarterback if Stafford can't play, but the Lions could still be interested in adding another quarterback for depth or to compete with Driskel if Stafford's injury becomes long-term.

It's unlikely that Colin Kaepernick has a long-term future in Detroit if Staffford is healthy enough to play, but the Lions could still be a good fit. Kaepernick needs a chance to get on the field and prove himself. The Lions may be a team which can provide him that opportunity.
