Billy Bush Suspended Following Lewd, Sexist 2005 Donald Trump Video Leak
UPDATE (OCTOBER 9): Today show host Billy Bush has reportedly been suspended by NBC in light of the release of a 2005 video which reveals Donald Trump making sexually obscene and potentially predatory remarks about women. Bush is both seen and heard in the video seeming to agree with and encourage Trump's statements.
In a statement obtained by The New York Times, Noah Oppenheim, the NBC executive in charge of the show, writes in a staff memo that "we’ve all been deeply troubled by the revelations of the past 48 hours."
"Let me be clear," Oppenheim continues. "There is simply no excuse for Billy’s language and behavior on that tape. NBC has decided to suspend Billy, pending further review of this matter."
It is unclear how long the suspension will last, or if Bush will be invited back to work on Today.
Access Hollywood has reportedly identified the woman who Donald Trump offensively refers to in Friday's leaked 2005 recording as the show's former host Nancy O'Dell, who was, at the time, a colleague of Trump's conversational partner Billy Bush on the entertainment program in 2005.
On Saturday, October 8, O'Dell issued a statement to Entertainment Tonight, on which she is now employed, responding to the vulgar statements made about her by Trump. Read her statement below:
"Politics aside, I’m saddened that these comments still exist in our society at all. When I heard the comments yesterday, it was disappointing to hear such objectification of women. The conversation needs to change because no female, no person, should be the subject of such crass comments, whether or not cameras are rolling. Everyone deserves respect no matter the setting or gender. As a woman who has worked very hard to establish her career, and as a mom, I feel I must speak out with the hope that as a society we will always strive to be better."
ORIGINAL POST (OCTOBER 7): Donald Trump has come under fire for sexism yet again after unedited audio and video footage -- in which the Republican nominee makes several derogatory, vulgar statements about women -- surfaced online earlier today (October 7).
The footage, which was obtained by The Washington Post, comes from a 2005 conversation Trump had with Access Hollywood host Billy Bush, while the two filmed an on-set segment about Trump’s then-cameo on the soap opera Days of Our Lives.
In the clip, Trump discusses an unsuccessful attempt to seduce a married woman.
“I moved on her and I failed. I’ll admit it. I did try and f---k her. She was married,” the Republican nominee says to Bush in the clip.
"And I moved on her very heavily," he continues. "In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, ‘I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture.’”
“I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look," Trump says.
The two then reportedly spot Arianne Zucker, the actress who eventually walks the pair to the Days of Our Lives set.
“Your girl's hot as s—t, in the purple,” Bush says about Zucker.
“I’ve gotta use some tic tacs, just in case I start kissing her,” Trump responds. “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful -- I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait.”
He continues, “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything…grab them by the p—y. You can do anything."
Trump released a statement responding to the recording, saying, “This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course - not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended.”
Bush -- who deleted his Twitter account shortly after the footage surfaced -- has also issued an apology, saying via Variety, "Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed. It’s no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry."
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine, meanwhile, responded to Trump's lewd comments.
