Dylann Roof Determined Fit to Stand Trial in Charleston Church Massacre
Dylann Roof, the man who walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., on June 17 2015, and proceeded to kill nine people, has been deemed fit to stand trial.
Earlier this month, a federal judge admitted that he'd ordered an evaluation to see whether the 22 year-old was legally competent to stand trial. Well, today U.S. District Judge Richard Mark Gergel ruled that Roof is in fact competent enough to stand trial, though the reasons behind his findings remain sealed. Jury selection in the federal trial is scheduled to resume on Monday.
Roof currently faces 33 federal counts of hate crimes, obstruction of religion and using a firearm in a violent crime. Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
