Edenville Dam Fails — Floods Mid-Michigan [Video]

The Mid-Michigan area is under water this morning after three dams failed along the rain swollen Tittabawassee River near Midland creating record flooding.

National Weather Service predictions say the river will crest at 38 feet on Thursday, 14 feet over flood stage and four feet over the previous record set in 1986.

The big problem was the Edenville Dam which broke Tuesday afternoon at Wixom Lake after massive rains Sunday and Monday, setting off flooding, and causing the river to also breach the dam at Sanford, and the dyke at Poseyville.

Pilot Ryan Kaleto posted this dramatic video of the dam at Edenville breaching Tuesday evening.

The owners of the dam had been cited by the state last year for failing to upgrade the facility.

Downtown Midland was under water as of Wednesday morning, and over 10,000 people have been evacuated and are without homes. Many of those people are sheltering at local high schools until the floodwaters subside.

Thanks to the break in the weather, the river is expected to recede quickly, but the damage will be severe to the river valley.
