Getting anywhere quickly on US-131 through Grand Rapids this weekend may be close to impossible. Double lane closures for road work will be in place on Saturday and Sunday.

The double lane closures on US-131 will be between Franklin Street and I-96. The work is weather dependent and is scheduled for between 6 am and 6 pm both Saturday and Sunday.

To make navigating through town even more difficult, during these times, the following ramps will also close:

  • Ramp from westbound I-196 to northbound US-131
  • On ramp from Franklin Street to northbound US-131
  • On ramp from Pearl Street to northbound US-131
  • On ramp from Leonard Street to northbound US-131 (Saturday only)
  • On ramp from Ann Street to southbound US-131 (Saturday only)

Plus, keep in mind that US-131 is the posted detour for the closing of Eastbound I-196. Traffic heading east on I-196 are diverted to northbound 131, adding even more traffic to that stretch of road.

Another project getting underway this weekend includes concrete pavement repairs and resurfacing of I-96 from M-11 (28th Street) to Thornapple River Drive in Kent County, and from the Kent/Ionia county line (Montcalm Avenue) to Bliss Road in Ionia County. This $4 million begins Friday, April 23rd and will run though July 1st. Weekend lane closures will be in effect 6 am Saturday through 6 am Monday on I-96 from M-11 to Thornapple River Drive. Weekday lane closures will be in place on I-96 from Montcalm Avenue to Bliss Road 6 pm Sunday through 6 am Friday.
