I-94 is a living hell on a good day. But when the first driving lake effect snow rolls through, its three times as hellish.

38 vehicles found that out Thursday.

The pile up occurred in the westbound lanes around exit 66 near Mattawan at 8:50am Thursday. The westbound lanes were closed at M-40 in Van Buren County until 11:10am when they reopened.

According to Michigan State Police 20 vehicles were involved in collisions in the westbound lanes of M-40 near I-94, while 12 more were involved near exit 60 at Paw Paw.

In all 38 cars were involved in collisions on the first big snow of the season.

Over four inches of snow fell near Mattawan and Paw Paw. Those towns are about 25 miles west of Kalamazoo heading toward Chicago.

There were only minor injuries reported by those involved in the collisions.
