In 1974, computers were known for helping with business applications and for the aerospace programs, but they were not known for helping with day to day function like human speech.

But the Artificial Language Lab at Michigan State University was already delving into projects like aiding those with speech and communication issues learn how to perform daily mundane tasks, like ordering a pizza.
