A former fire chief from Kent County, Michigan, has now been charged with embezzling from his very own fire department.

According to WZZM, former Cutlerville Fire Chief, Todd Szakacs, has been charged on embezzlement by a public official and using a computer to commit a crime.

The Kent County Sheriff Department was notified in October 8 about possible embezzlement from Byron and Gaines Townships. Both townships share in ownership of the Cutlerville Fire Department.

Apparently the investigation found that many items that were purchased for a renovation project from 2016 were no where to be found.

Szakacs was the supervisor of the renovation project and involved in purchasing the items from material to equipment that were used on the project.

Investigators issued a search warrant on Szakacs' home where they found several of the missing items.

It is very unfortunate that a leader of the community chose such a dark path and to abuse his power for his own personal gain.

The Kent County Prosecutor's Office is now going over the case and will decide soon on how they will proceed.
