For many people, tax season is important because they depend on the refund they receive from the IRS. Unfortunately, while the U.S. government is shutdown, the IRS will not be handing back any refunds. There is no clue or timeline on how long the government plans to be shutdown, but this could potentially be a huge blow for anyone counting on their refund. During a shutdown, the IRS typically doesn’t perform audits, pay refunds or offer assistance to taxpayers if they have questions, especially outside of the filing season, according to Fox 17.

Tax filing season usually takes place in mid-January, and if the government shutdown is resolved by then it may have little to no impact on taxpayers and their refunds. The IRS has not yet announced when people and businesses can begin submitting their income tax returns. The closer things get to causing a delay in the time period to which we receive our refunds, the more pressure will be on President Trump and lawmakers to make a deal and come to a resolve.
