About the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the nation being established in 1925. The school has been a staple in the community offering classes to the area since the 1960s.

Now the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre & School of Theatre Arts is one of the largest community theatres in the country. Each year productions are possible with the help of over 800 talented local volunteers who do everything from singing, dancing and acting, to building sets, sewing, ushering, and more.

Back for the 97th Season

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is presenting its 97th Season for 2022 – 2023. The season this year features seven productions, including four musicals, two plays, and one special event.

The Civic Theatre will feature School of Rock, The Revolutionists, Mary Poppins, Once On This Island, Puffs, Something Rotten, and the Civic Theatre’s Ten For All playwriting festival.

This year's season runs from early August 2022 and runs through mid-March 2023.

SCHOOL OF ROCK
Based on the classic 2000's movie, this rock-filled adventure follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school and turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.

This production is running August 5th – August 28th, 2022 and is rated Rated PG for mild language and adult themes.

THE REVOLUTIONISTS
This grand comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we go about changing the world.

This production is running September 23rd – October 9th, 2022 and is Rated PG-13 for adult language and innuendo.

MARY POPPINS
Based on the the popular Walt Disney film; The jack-of-all-trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again.

This production is running November 18th – December 18th, 2022 and is Rated PG.

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND
This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid garnered a combined 16 Tony nominations between the original production in 1990 and the 2017 revival which earned Best Revival of a Musical.

This production is running January 20th – February 5th, 2023 and is Rated PG for some adult themes.

PUFFS
Or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic
This clever and inventive gives you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children.

This production is running March 2nd – March 12th, 2023 and is Rated PG-13 for adult language and innuendo.

SOMETHING ROTTEN!
Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten.

This production is running March 17th – March 19th, 2023 and is Rated PG-13 for adult language and innuendo.
